Quotient divisible abelian groups

From MaRDI portal

An abelian group \(G\) is said to be quotient divisible if \(G\) is of finite torsion-free rank and there exists a free subgroup \(F\) of \(G\) such that \(G/F\) is divisible. Various categories of abelian groups and their relationships are considered. Let \(\mathcal Q\mathcal D\) denote the category whose objects are the quotient divisible groups with reduced torsion subgroups and maps the quasi-homomorphisms, let \(\mathcal Q\mathcal D_0\) be the full subcategory of \(\mathcal Q\mathcal D\) with objects the torsion-free quotient divisible groups, and let \(\mathcal Q\mathcal T\mathcal F\) denote the category of finite-rank torsion-free abelian groups with maps the quasi-homomorphisms. The authors prove that \(\mathcal Q\mathcal D\) and \(\mathcal Q\mathcal T\mathcal F\) are dual categories by constructing a contravariant equivalence \(d\colon\mathcal Q\mathcal D\to\mathcal Q\mathcal T\mathcal F\). They show that the restriction of \(d\) to \(\mathcal Q\mathcal D_0\) coincides with Arnold duality [\textit{D. M. Arnold}, Pac. J. Math. 42, 11-15 (1972; Zbl 0262.20062)]. Moreover, a category, \(\mathcal Q\mathcal G\), considered before by the authors is embedded in \(\mathcal Q\mathcal D\), and \(d\) restricted to this embedded copy yields the duality between \(\mathcal Q\mathcal G\) and the category of locally free torsion-free finite-rank groups with maps quasi-homomorphisms, which was established by the authors [in Abelian groups and modules, Math. Appl., Dordr. 343, 185-192 (1995; Zbl 0844.20036)]. The objects of \(\mathcal Q\mathcal G\) are the self-small mixed abelian groups of finite torsion-free rank which are divisible modulo their torsion subgroups, and the maps of \(\mathcal Q\mathcal G\) are the quasi-homomorphisms.
