Relative cubulation of relative strict hyperbolization

From MaRDI portal

The paper under review is devoted to the study of relatively hyperbolic groups arising from relative strict hyperbolization in the sense of \textit{R. M. Charney} and \textit{M. W. Davis} [Topology 34, No. 2, 329--350 (1995; Zbl 0826.53040)]. It shows that, under suitable assumptions on the peripheral subgroups, many such groups admit a cocompact action by isometries on a CAT(0) cubical complex. In particular, the resulting groups are residually finite and even virtually compact special.\N\NHyperbolization procedures, introduced by \textit{M. W. Davis} and \textit{T. Januszkiewicz} [J. Differ. Geom. 34, No. 2, 347--386 (1991; Zbl 0723.57017)] and further refined in the strict version by Charney and Davis [loc.~cit.], provide general constructions of locally CAT(0) or CAT(\(-1\)) spaces from simplicial complexes. When applied to manifolds, they yield aspherical manifolds with controlled curvature properties. These techniques have seen significant developments, including applications to Riemannian geometry as in the work of \textit{P. Ontaneda} [Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 131, 1--72 (2020; Zbl 1442.53026)].\N\NThe authors adapt techniques they developed in their earlier work [Invent. Math. 236, No. 3, 925--997 (2024; Zbl 1550.20069)] to the relative setting. They construct a stratified piecewise hyperbolic complex \(X_\Gamma\) and associate to it a dual CAT(0) cubical complex \(\mathcal{C}(X_\Gamma)\), defined via a mirror structure induced by a folding map. The group \(G = \pi_1(\mathcal{R}(K,L))\) acts cocompactly by isometries on \(\mathcal{C}(X_\Gamma)\), with cell stabilizers that are either maximal parabolic or full relatively quasiconvex subgroups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. Although the action fails to be proper, the CAT(0) property of \(\mathcal{C}(X_\Gamma)\) is established via local geometric and combinatorial arguments, notably through an analysis of links and coverings.\N\NAn appendix by D. Groves and J. Manning establishes a separability criterion ensuring residual finiteness of \(G\), provided the peripheral subgroups are residually finite and satisfy mild conditions.
