Semi-generalized Bassian groups

From MaRDI portal

This paper is a contribution to the structure theory of abelian groups. An abelian group \(G\) is \textit{Bassian} if for any subgroup \(N\), the existence of an injective homomorphism \( G\to G/N\) implies \(N=0\), and \textit{generalised Bassian} if the existence of such a homomorphism implies \(N\) is a direct summand. In this paper, these definitions are generalised by defining \(G\) to be \textit{semi-generalized Bassian} if for any subgroup \(H\), the existence of an injective homomorphism \(G\to G/H\) implies that \(H\) is essential in a direct summand of \(G\).\N\NThe authors classify the semi-generalized Bassian groups which are \(p\)-torsion, torsion-free or splitting mixed. They also classify the groups for which every subgroup is essential in a direct summand.
