Some kind of software should be reliable, especially. Such software systems controlling the operation of chemical plants, refineries, nuclear plant and air traffic control. Software reliability is the probability that the software will not fail for a specified period of time under specified conditions. The book aims to modeling and analysis of software systems that provides: assurance that the software has achieved safety goals a means of rationalizing whether further testing is warranted or whether the software has been sufficiently tested. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to software reliability and basic terminologies used throughout the book. In chapter 2 are discussed the fundamental definitions and concepts of reliability. These concepts provide the basis for quantifying the reliability of a system. Chapter 3 provides basic concepts of software engineering assessment including software lifecycle, software development process and its applications, software verification and validation, and data analysis. It follows the presentation of various software reliability models and methods for estimating software reliability and other performance reliability measures such as software complexity and number of remaining errors. Chapter 5 comprehensively covers software reliability models for the failure phenomenon based on the NHPP. The generalized NHPP model and the software mean time between failures are also discussed. After that, are discussed some recent software cost models based on the NHPP software reliability functions. In addition to the cost of traditional models, the models mentioned here include the warranty and risk costs due to software failures. Various optimal release policies of the software system, that is, when to conclude testing and release the software, are also presented. Chapter 7 is devoted to the basic concepts of fault-tolerant software techniques and several other advanced techniques including self-checking schemes. The reliability analysis of fault-tolerant software schemes such as recovery block, N-version programming, and hybrid fault-tolerant systems are presented. Chapter 8 discusses recent advances and research directions in software reliability engineering, Several new software reliability models that incorporate environmental factors are also discussed. The appendices contain basic mathematical statistics, introduction to probability theory, forms for interviewing, various distribution tables, and solutions to selected problems. The text is seen as suitable for one-semester graduate course on software reliability.
