Some properties of cyclic operators

From MaRDI portal

Let \(T\) be a bounded linear operator on a Banach space \(X\), and let \[ \text{Orb}(T,x)=\{x,T(x),T^2(x),\dots\} \] be the orbit of \(x\in X\) under \(T\). \(T\) is cyclic if there is an \(x\in X\) such that the linear span of \(\text{Orb}(T,x)\) is dense in \(X\). If the set of scalar multiples of elements in \(\text{Orb}(T,x)\) is dense in \(X\) then \(T\) is supercyclic. The corresponding vector \(x\) is called cyclic or supercyclic for \(T\). In this paper the authors study supercyclicity, cyclicity of the powers \(T^n\) and simutaneous cyclicity of \(T\) and \(T^{-1}\). They prove that if \(T\) is supercyclic and the sequence \(\{\| T^n\|\}^\infty_{n=1}\) is bounded then \(T^n(x)\to 0\) for each \(x\in X\). As an application they show that an analytic composition operator, on the Hardy space \(H^2\) of the unit disc, is not supercyclic whenever the inducing map has a fixed point inside the open unit disc. They also prove that if all powers \(T^n\), \(n=1,2,3,\dots\), are cyclic then \(T\) has a dense set of cyclic vectors. Further the authors supply a Banach space version of the result [\textit{D. A. Herrero}, J. Funct. Anal. 99, No. 1, 179-190 (1991; Zbl 0758.47016)] stating that if \(T\) is supercyclic then the point spectrum \(\sigma_p(T^*)\) of the adjoint contains at most one point. It is further shown that if \(T\) is cyclic and 0 is in the unbounded component of the resolvent set of \(T\) then \(T^{-1}\) is cyclic.
