Some small Sylow numbers

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a finite group, let \(p\) be a prime and let \(P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)\) be a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\). Denote by \(s_p(G)=|G:N_G(P)|\) the number of Sylow \(p\)-subgroups of \(G\). The paper studies finite groups for which \(s_p(G)\) is small relative to \(p\).\N\NOne main result describes the structure of a \(p\)-reduced group \(G\) when \(s_p(G)\le 1+p+p^2\). It is shown that \(P\) is a T.I. subgroup of order \(p\) or \(p^2\) and that \(G\) acts primitively on \(\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)\). This leads to a classification. If \(|P|=p^2\), then \(s_p(G)=1+p^2\) and either \(G\cong L_2(p^2)\) or \(p=2\) and \(G\cong \mathrm{AGL}_1(5)\). If \(s_p(G)=1+p\), then either \(G\cong L_2(p)\) or \(p\) is a Mersenne prime and \(G\cong \mathrm{AGL}_1(p+1)\). If \(|P|=p\), then either \(s_p(G)\) is a prime power and \(G\) is a Frobenius group isomorphic to a subgroup of \(\mathrm{AGL}_1(s_p(G))\), or one of the exceptional simple groups \(L_2(p+1)\), \(L_2(p-1)\), or \(L_3(3)\) occurs under the corresponding arithmetic conditions.\N\NA second result proves that if \(s_p(G)<1+3p+2p^2\), then \(P/O_p(G)\) has order at most \(p^4\) for odd \(p\) and at most \(2^6\) for \(p=2\) and moreover \(P\) is irredundant.
