In this paper the authors show as their main result that if $f,g:X\to Y$ are maps between two compact manifolds with $\dim X\geq\dim Y$ then the Nielsen number $N(f,g)$ vanishes if and only if $g$ is homotopic to $g'$ so that the coincidence set $C(f,g')$ is empty. As a consequence from the proof of this result they also show that for any two maps $f,g:X\to Y$ between two compact nilmanifolds with $\dim X\geq\dim Y=n$, the following statements are equivalent: $N(f,g)=0$; the Reidemeister coincidence number $R(f,g)=\infty$; $f$ and $g$ are deformable to be coincidence free; the (primary) obstruction $o_n(f,g)=0$. Moreover, they extend the main result to show that if $X$ is a path connected topological space with finitely generated fundamental group and $Y$ is a compact nilmanifold then for any two maps $f,g:X\to Y$, if $R(f,g)=\infty$, then $f$ and $g$ are deformable to be coincidence free. Finally, using a result of \textit{R. B. S. Brooks} [Pac. J. Math. 40, 45--52 (1972; Zbl 0235.55006)], one of the two homotopies can be made constant.
