Variable structure control with discontinuous control laws is briefly discussed from a historical point of view. Then soft variable structure control is described for linear plants. This methodology is characterized by employing infinitely many controllers and switching among them at infinitesimally short intervals, yielding continuous varying controller structures. Thus sliding modes and discontinuities in the actuator control signals are avoided. An example about the control of a submarine is presented.
