The authors extend their earlier approach to modelling dynamic aspects of knowledge and ability of rational agents [``A logic of capabilities'', Lect. Notes Comput. Sci. 813, 366-378 (1994; Zbl 0964.03520)] by the concept of internal and external non-determinism respectively. First in the paper, the relevant features of the former system are given. Next, for some versions of non-determinism occurring in the literature it is discussed whether they are in concordance with the notion of ability of agents. The respective `correctly' extended system is defined afterwards, and several properties meeting the intuition are established each time. The formal development is illuminated by several examples and detailed explanations.
