In the present paper, the author proves an extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type for line bundle sections on a subvariety \(Z\) of general codimension in a normal projective variety \(X\). The method of proof gives conditions to be satisfied for such extensions in a general setting which are satisfied especially when the subvariety is given by an appropriate multiplier ideal sheaf. More precisely, \(Z\) needs to be a maximal log-canonical center of a log-canonical pair \((X,D)\) and not contained in \(X_{sing}\). Let \(A\) be an ample \(\mathbb{Q}\)-line bundle and \(K_X+L\) the \(\mathbb{Q}\)-line bundle \(\mathcal{O}(K_X+D+A)\). If \(B\) is any singular hermitian line bundle on \(X\) with nonnegative curvature such that \(K_X+L+B\) is an integral line bundle, then sections of this line bundle over \(Z\) extend to \(X\) in the \(L^2\)-sense with respect to certain \(L^2\)-norms. The proof is highly motivated by the \(L^2\)-extension strategy pursued by Siu in his proof of the invariance of plurigenera. In the last section, the author also gives pluriadjoint extension results which are usual consequences of such \(L^2\)-extensions.
