The Hochs-Wang orbital integral of a measurable function \(f\) on a connected semi-simple Lie group \(G\) with respect to a semi-simple element \(g\) of \(G\) is defined to be the integral of \(f(h gh^{-1})\) over \(G\) mod the centralizer of \(g\) by the left invariant measure induced by a Haar measure on \(G\). The integral converges for elements of the Harish-Chandra Schwarts algebra that is a dense subalgebra of the reduced group \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_r(G)\) of \(G\), closed under holomorphic functional calculus, so that the integral implies a map from the zero K-theory group of \(C^*_r(G)\) to \(\mathbb C\), as the map induced by the von Neumann trace as the evaluation map at the identity of \(G\). In particular, for the Dirac operator index \(K\)-theory class in \(K_0(C^*_r(G))\), the HW O-integral is computed as zero or not but explicitly by Chern character and Todd class. As well, the integral is also quite differently computed and characterized by a maximal compact subgroup \(K\) of \(G\), for which the rank of \(K\) is equal or not to that of \(G\). Consequently, several interesting results are deduced as corollaries as follows. 4a. Separating the \(K\)-theory classes for \(C^*_r(G)\) by the HW traces as the integrals. 4b. Distributions associated to the \(K\)-theory classes and the traces, defined for functions on regular elements of \(G\). 4c. Injectivity of the Dirac induction. 4d. Index induction formula. 4e. The Selberg principle in \(K\)-theory for \(C^*_r(G)\) as vanishing of some of the traces. 4f. Tannaka duality by \(K\)-theory for \(G\) as the Cartan motion group or \(G=K\). What's more such as characters as integrals and the Connes-Kasparov conjecture, but omitted.
