A compact Riemann surface \(X\) of genus \(g\geq 2\) which admits a cyclic group of automorphisms \(C_{p}\) of prime order \(p\) such that the quotient \(X/C_{p}\) has genus \(0\) is called a cyclic \(p\)-gonal surface and \(C_{p}\) is called a \(p\)-gonal group for \(X\). Let \(A\) be the full group of automorphisms of \(X\) and let \(N\) be the normalizer of \(C_{p}\) in \(A\). If \(C_{p}\) is normal in \(A\) the surface \(X\) is called a normal \(p\)-gonal surface. Else \(X\) is called a non-normal \(p\)-gonal surface and any group \(G\) such that \(C_{p}\leq G \leq A\) in which \(C_{p}\) is non-normal is called a non-normal \(p\)-gonal overgroup. In this paper all non-normal \(p\)-gonal Riemann surfaces are classified. Let \(\Gamma _{p},\Gamma _{A}\) and \(\Gamma _{N}\) denote the corresponding Fuchsian groups to \(C_{p}\), \(A\) and \(N\) respectively. The author's approach to the problem is in a first step to classify several families of \(p\)-gonal surfaces and then to show that each non-normal \(p\)-gonal surface must lie in one of these families. Since \(X\) is a normal \(p\)-gonal surface if \(g>(p-1)^{2}\) the author studies \(p\) -gonal surfaces of genus \(g\leq (p-1)^{2}\) for small values of \(p\), namely \( p=3,5\) and \(7\). Then he goes to the case when \(A\) is a non-normal \(p\)-gonal overgroup, \(p\geq 11\) and \(p^{2}\) divides \(\left| A\right| \). Finally he deals with a general value of \(p\). The classification of non-normal \(p\)-gonal surfaces is done by showing the possible signatures of \(\Gamma _{A}\) and \( \Gamma _{N}\), appearing three infinite families of signatures and four special cases. The genus \(g\) and the full group of automorphisms \(A\) are also given.
