Let $\{\phi_k \}$ be the usual dyadic resolution of unity in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $s\in \mathbb{R}$, $0<p<\infty$, $0<q\le \infty$. Then $B^s_q [L_p] = B^s_{p,q}$ collects all $f\in S' (\mathbb{R}^n)$ such that \[ \| f \, | B^s_q [L_p] \| = \Big( \sum_k 2^{skq} \big\| (\phi_k \hat{f} )^\vee \, | L_p \big\|^q \Big)^{1/q} \] is finite and $F^s_q [L_p ] = F^s_{p,q}$ collects all $f\in S' (\mathbb{R}^n)$ such that \[ \|f \, | F^s_q [L_p ] \| = \Big\| \Big( \sum_k 2^{skq} \big| (\phi_k \hat{f} )^\vee (\cdot) \big|^q \Big)^{1/q} \, | L_p \Big\| \] is finite. Sharp embeddings of type \[ B^{s_0}_{q_0} [L_{p_0}] \to B^{s_1}_{q_1} [L_{p_1}], \qquad F^{s_0}_{q_0} [L_{p_0}] \to F^{s_1}_{q_1} [L_{p_1}], \] \[ B^{s_0}_{q_0} [L_{p_0}] \to F^{s_1}_{q_1} [L_{p_1}], \qquad F^{s_0}_{q_0} [L_{p_0}] \to B^{s_1}_{q_1} [L_{p_1}], \] play a central role in the study of these well-known spaces. Nowadays, one has final answers. It is the main aim of the present paper to replace in the above definition the Lebesgue spaces $L_p$ by the more general Lorentz spaces $L_{p,r}$ where $0<p<\infty$, $0<r \le \infty$ with $L_{p,p} =L_p$, and to study in detail sharp embeddings of the above type for these more general scales. Special attention is paid to limiting embeddings.
