Zariski's theorem investigates irreducible subvarieties of linear systems of the projective plane and geometric properties of the underlying curves. It lays the ground for many interesting results on the enumerative geometry of plane curves. This paper is devoted to analogues of Zariski's theorem in positive characteristic. It considers generalizations to other toric surfaces and makes some assumptions on the linear systems in consideration. It also contributes interesting examples where we do not have the nice features known from Zariski's theorem, e.g.\ where general curves are not nodal but have more severe singularities. The methods used for the study include toric and tropical geometry and deformation theory.
