Consider the cell differentiation model \[ \begin{aligned} {{dy_i}\over {dt}}&=-\mu_i y_i+\Bigl(\alpha_i {{x_i^n}\over {k_i^n+x_i^n}}+\sigma_i{{S_i}\over {\rho_i+S_i}}\Bigr){1\over {1+{{x_\nu/\gamma_\nu}}}}+\beta_i,\\ {{dx_i}\over {dt}}&=v_iy_i-\tau_ix_i,\quad i=1, 2, \end{aligned} \] where \(\nu=2\) if \(i=1\) and \(\nu=1\) if \(i=2\), \(x_1\) and \(x_2\) denote the concentrations of the transcription factors \(T\)-bet and GATA-3, respectively, \(y_1\) and \(y_2\) are their respective mRNA concentrations, \(\beta_i\) is a constant basal rate of mRNA synthesis, the parameter \(\gamma_i\) is the value of \(x_i\) at which the ratio of production of \(y_i\), due to the combined auto-activation and cytokine signaling is halved, \(\sigma_i{{S_i}\over {\rho_i+S_i}}\) denotes the contribution of combined cytokine signaling to the rate of growth in \(y_i\), the term \({1\over {1+x_l/\gamma_l}}\) is the cross-inhibition between \(y_1\) and \(y_2\) occurring at both the auto-activation level and the cytokine signaling level, and \(\alpha_i\), \(\mu_i\), \(v_i\), \(\tau_i\) and \(\sigma_i\) are parameters. The authors derive conditions on the parameters under which the gene expressions in the \(T\)-cell population aggregate at one, two or four points which connect to various cell differentiation scenarios.
