Let \(D\) be a division ring, let \(n\) be a positive integer and denote by \(\mathrm{GL}_n(D)\) the general skew linear group of degree \(n\) over \(D\). In this paper, the authors study the structure of a subgroup \(G\) of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(D)\) satisfying some rank conditions.\N\NRecall that a group \(G\) is said to be \textit{radical} if it has an ascending series whose factors all are locally nilpotent, \(G\) is \textit{nearly radical} if G has an ascending series whose factors all are either locally nilpotent or finite and \(G\) is \textit{generalized radical} if \(G\) has an ascending series whose factors all are either locally nilpotent or locally finite. Recall moreover that a group \(G\) has finite \textit{co-central rank} \(s = \mathrm{rc}(G)\) if for every finitely generated subgroup \(H\) of \(G\), the quotient group \(H/Z(H)\) can be generated by \(s\) elements and \(s\) is the least integer with this property.\N\NThe paper contains many results about subgroups of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(D)\). Among them, we find the following:\N\NTheorem 3.5. Let \(D\) be a division ring and \(n\) a positive integer. If G is a locally nearly radical subgroup of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(D)\) of finite co-central rank then \(G\) has a normal solvable subgroup \(N\) of finite co-central rank such that the quotient group \(G/N\) is finite. Moreover, if \(G\) satisfies the maximal condition on subgroups, then the converse holds.\N\NTheorem 3.7. Let \(D\) be a division ring and n a positive integer. Assume that G is a subgroup of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(D)\). Then, the following conditions are equivalent:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[(1)] \(G\) is locally generalized radical of finite rank.\N\item[(2)] \(G\) contains a normal solvable subgroup \(S\) of finite rank such that \(G/S\) is finite\N\end{itemize}\N\NThese results generalize some previous results by the same authors.
