The aim of this paper is to construct an analogue of the spin group associated to any (separable) Hilbert space H equipped with a polarization \(H=H_+\oplus H_-\). The usual construction in the finite- dimensional case is via Clifford algebras. By viewing H as a direct limit of finite-dimensional spaces, the authors construct a group Spin(H) which is a double cover of a certain `restricted' orthogonal group SO(H), and a spin representation of Spin(H), by unbounded operators, on the Hilbert space completion \(\Lambda\) of the exterior algebra of \(H_+\). However, this group is too small to give a complete picture of the Fock representations on \(\Lambda\). The general linear group \(GL(H_+)\) acts by automorphisms on Spin(H) and its spin representation extends to the semi-direct product. The quotient of the semi-direct product by the kernel of this representation is the required group \(\hat Spin(H)\); it is an extension by \(C^{\times}\) of a restricted orthogonal group of H. Several different constructions of the spin group are given in [\textit{A. N. Pressley} and \textit{G. B. Segal}, Loop groups (Oxf. Univ. Press, Oxf., 1986; Zbl 0618.22011)] which avoid the use of Clifford algebras.
