Stability, bounded generation and strong boundedness
The paper studies generalized conjugacy diameters for simply connected split Chevalley groups over rings of \(S\)-algebraic integers of global fields. The main focus is on obtaining upper bounds that are linear in the rank, thereby determining the growth rate of these diameters for the families under consideration.\N\NOne of the main results shows that for root systems \(\Phi \in \big \{A_n, C_n, E_6, E_7, E_8, F_4, G_2 \big \}\) there are constants such that \(\Delta_k(G(\Phi,R))\) is bounded above and below by quantities linear in \(\mathrm{rank}(\Phi)\), with the lower bound \(k\,\mathrm{rank}(\Phi)\) and an upper bound of the form \((D(K)+Ck)\mathrm{rank}(\Phi)\). The paper also proves a uniform linear bound for analogous groups over rings of regular functions on suitable curves over algebraic extensions of finite fields.\N\NA central ingredient is a bounded generation result for elementary congruence subgroups in terms of conjugates of root elements. The argument uses stability properties of rings, congruence subgroups and a reduction from the global setting to suitable semi-local completions, which allows the author to combine congruence subgroup control with previously known asymptotic results for conjugation-invariant norms.
