Strongly not divisible abelian groups

From MaRDI portal

All groups in this review are abelian. An abelian group \(A\) is not divisible if \(A \neq nA\) for some non-zero integer \(n.\) In [\textit{J. A. Lewallen}, Rocky Mt. J. Math. 37, No. 1, 285--289 (2007; Zbl 1143.16019)], a non-zero abelian group \(A\) is called an OI-group (``onto-implies-invertible) if \(A \neq nA\) for every integer \(n \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus \{-1, 0, 1\}.\) This amounts to saying that \(A\) is an OI-group exactly if the multiplication by \(n,\) \({\rho}_n : A \to A,\) is surjective only for \(n =\pm 1.\) In [\textit{J. A. Lewallen} and \textit{N. Sagullo}, Missouri J. Math. Sci. 27, No. 1, 33--36 (2015; Zbl 1337.20061)], a characterization of the torsion OI-groups was obtained. Indeed, a torsion abelian group \(A\) is OI exactly if for every prime \(p,\) the group \(A\) has a cyclic summand of order \(p^s\) for some positive integer \(s.\)\N\NIn the paper under review, the authors call an abelian group \(A\) to be strongly not divisible if \(A \neq nA\) for every integer \(n \neq \pm 1.\) It is observed that these are precisely the OI-groups. The authors investigate torsion, torsion-free and mixed OI-groups in separate sections. Moreover, they study the interaction of OI property with the classical functors in homological algebra. The fact that a direct sum of an OI-group with any arbitrary group is an OI-group (Corollary 2.4) makes the description of such groups a difficult problem to tackle. The authors present two approaches to describe the OI-groups using cones generated by certain natural choices of generators. In this context, they introduce some notions such as genuine and minimal OI-groups. In the final section, the authors give the pure version of the results by replacing direct summands with pure subgroups. Indeed, the idea comes from the fact that if a pure subgroup of an abelian group satisfies the OI-property, then the group also satisfies this property (Theorem 2.3). This yields to introducing some notions such as pure-genuine and pure-minimal OI-groups. There is work left for anyone interested.
