Superlinear indefinite systems: beyond Lotka-Volterra models

From MaRDI portal

This paper concerns the dynamics of the parabolic problem \[ \begin{aligned} u_t-\Delta u=\lambda u-u^2-buv, \;v_t-\Delta v=\mu v-v^2-cuv&\quad \text{in }\Omega\times \mathbb{R}_+,\\ u=v=0 &\quad \text{on }\partial\Omega\times \mathbb{R}_+,\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x)\geq 0,\;v(x,0)=v_0(x)\geq 0 &\quad\text{in }\Omega,\end{aligned} \] where \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^N\), \(N\geq 1\) is a bounded domain. The dynamics of this system is investigated. It is shown that the presence of refuge areas in competitive environments represents an optimal mechanism to avoid extinction. Many results are related to population dynamics and economy.
