The extension problem for actions of compact Lie groups
In the paper under review, for a compact Lie group \(G\) and a compact Lie group \(K\) containing \(G\) as a subgroup, the author gives criteria for extending a given continuous action of \(G\) on a finitistic space (e.g., on a paracompact manifold) to a continuous action of \(K\) on the space in question, that preserves certain properties (e.g., freeness or effectiveness) of the original action of \(G\). By applying tools from equivariant cohomology theory, such as the Borel fibration and the Leray-Serre spectral sequence, the extension problem is described using a morphism between appropriate spectral sequences, which yields the extension criteria. At the end of the paper, a number of specific applications are presented.
