Uniform rectifiability and quasiminimizing sets of arbitrary codimension

From MaRDI portal

The book deals with the regularity properties of quasiminimizing sets in \(R^n\). Roughly speaking, a quasiminimizing set of dimension \(k\) has the property that its \(k\)-dimensional Hausdorff measure decreases in a controlled way under Lipschitz deformations (the class of admissible deformations includes maps which are not one-to-one). This concept has been introduced by F. J. Almgren in 1968. Almgren showed that quasiminimizing sets are always rectifiable and that their \(k\)-dimensional Hausdorff measure satisfies uniform upper and lower bounds (the so-called Ahlfors regularity property). Moreover, he proved that if the quasiminimality constant tends to 1 sufficiently fast as the scale of the deformation tends to \(0\), then these sets are smooth \({\mathcal H}^k\)-almost everywhere. The authors make a more refined analysis of the regularity properties of this class of sets, showing that they satisfy the so-called BPLG property (Big Pieces of Lipschitz Graphs) and, as a consequence, are uniformly rectifiable. This result is almost sharp, due to the fact that any Lipschitz \(k\)-dimensional graph is a quasiminimizing set, with a constant depending on the Lipschitz constant of the function. Analogous results are obtained for sets satisfying an upper bound on the \(k\)-dimensional area and a lower bound on the \(k\)-dimensional topology. One motivation behind this problem is that quasiminimizing sets arise as minimizers of area-type functionals with discontinuous coefficients; for instance functionals of the type \[ J_M(S):={\mathcal H}^k(S\cap K)+M{\mathcal H}^k(S\setminus K),\qquad M>>1 \] arise as an approximation of a constrained area minimization problem, the constraint being that \(S\) is contained in a given compact set \(K\).
