The presentation of large amounts of heterogeneous data on the World-Wide Web normally implies the relocating and restructuring of the original data. The authors' present approach avoids these disadvantages by generating metadata that impose an arbitrary logical structure on the existing and new obtained data. The proposed approach is based on the introduction of a visual language VRDL (Visual Repository Definition Language) to replace the textual language with the following advantages: (1) VRDL is easier to comprehend in comparison to the original textual language, its design being inspired by Nassi-Shneiderman diagrams. (2) Using an automatic diagram editor generator, the authors built a graphical editor dedicated to syntactic editing in VRDL, useful to get maximal help from VRDL. The VRDL applicability is demonstrated by a real example, using VRDL to define a structured repository of judicial opinions from the U.S. Supreme Court that are available as plain text files for anonimous ftp.
