Vortex methods: theory and practice
The main purpose of this book is to present and analyze vortex methods as tool for direct numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flows. Vortex methods have reached today a level of maturity, offering an interesting alternative to finite difference and spectral methods for high-resolution numerical solutions of Navier-Stokes equations. In the past two decades, research in numerical analysis aspects of vortex methods has provided a solid mathematical background for understanding the convergence featues of the method, and several new tools have been developed to generalize its application. At the same time, vortex methods retain their physical character that was a motivation for their introduction. The book demonstrates important recent advances in vortex methods, and will be an invaluable reference book to all those with an active interest in the areas of numerical analysis and fluid mechanics. The book may also serve as a textbook in the schools of applied mathematics and engineering.
