A group \(G\) is said to be conjugacy separable if for each pair of elements \(x,y\in G\) such that \(x\) and \(y\) are not conjugate in \(G\), there exists a finite homomorphic image \(\overline G\) of \(G\) such that the images of \(x\), \(y\) are not conjugate in \(\overline G\). To prove conjugacy separability for a group \(G\) is often only possible under additional restrictions on \(G\). In the case of group amalgams the subgroup separability for the amalgam factors is such a restriction. A group \(G\) is called \(H\)-separable for a subgroup \(H\) if for each \(x\in G\setminus H\) there exists a normal subgroup \(N\) of \(G\) with finite index in \(G\) and \(x\not\in HN\); and \(G\) is called subgroup separable if it is \(H\)-separable for each finitely generated subgroup \(H\). With these notations, if \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) are conjugacy separable and subgroup separable then the free product \(G_1*_HG_2\) with amalgamation is conjugacy separable whenever \(H\subset Z(G_1)\cap Z(G_2)\), where \(Z(G)\) denotes the centre of \(G\). This can be generalized to tree products of finitely many conjugacy separable and subgroup separable groups amalgamating central subgroups with trivial intersections.
