Twisted representations of vertex algebras are important for orbifold theory and they have been studied by many authors. In this paper, the author first introduces basic techniques of generalized vertex operators in a general setting. Then two applications are discussed. The first one is the realization of conformal algebras by generalized formal series. The second one is the construction of twisted representations of the vertex operator (super)algebra \(V_L\) associated with an integral lattice \(L\). Twisted representations of the lattice vertex operator algebras were studied by \textit{J. Lepowsky} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82, 8295--8299 (1985; Zbl 0579.17010)] and \textit{C. Dong} and \textit{J. Lepowsky} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 110, No. 3, 259--295 (1996; Zbl 0862.17021)]. However, the techniques here are different. A certain category of \(\delta\)-twisted representations is introduced, where \(\widehat\sigma\) is an automorphism of \(V_L\) induced from an automorphism \(\sigma\) of \(L\). It is shown that any object of the category is semisimple and there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects.
