Using probability theory, mathematical statistics and operator theory the author motivates the following three axioms for measuring apparatus: (i) Mixing law: If two apparatuses are applied to a single system in succession, the joint probability distribution of outputs from those two apparatuses depend affinely on the input. (ii) Extendability axiom: Every apparatus measuring one system can be trivially extended to an apparatus measuring a larger system including the original system without changing the statistics. (iii) Realizability postulate: Every indirect measurement model corresponds to an apparatus whose measuring process is described by the model
