Let \(k\) be a commutative ring. In this paper the author introduces the notion of double algebra: these are \(k\)-modules endowed with two associative algebra structures satisfying certain compatibility conditions, modelled by the properties of the product and the convolution product in a Hopf algebra. Several features of double algebras like antipodes, integrals, Frobenius conditions and duality, are studied. A distinguished class of distributive (Frobenius) double algebras is considered and it is shown that these always possess an antipode. Several examples are discussed, in particular in connection with double categories, Frobenius extensions, Takeuchi products, Hopf algebras, weak Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids.
