The authors consider the Cauchy problem for the damped compressible Euler equations for polytropic perfect gas (pressure depends on density as follows: \(P(\rho)=P_0\rho^\gamma\), \(1\leq\gamma<3\)). The initial data allow vacuum: \(\rho(x,0)\geq 0\). This complicates the problem. The existence of a solution in \(L^\infty\) is proved. The asymptotic behavior is studied: the solution converges in \(L^p_{\text{loc}}\) to the solution of the porous-media equation at time grows till infinity. The main tool is the compensated compactness theory.
