The authors study the Cauchy problem for the \(p\)-system \(v_t-u_x=0\), \(u_t+p(v)_x=-f(u)\), \(x\in {\mathbb R}\), \(t>0\), with nonlinear damping term \(-f(u)\). They show that for sufficiently small initial data the Cauchy problem admits a unique global solution, which tends time-asymptotically to the corresponding nonlinear diffusion wave governed by the classical Darcy's law. Furthermore, for \(2\leq p\leq+\infty\) the \(L^p\) convergence rates of the solutions are also obtained.
