In the present article the authors give a result (called the \(\mu\)-conjecture) that supports a wider conjecture proposed by \textit{T. Ito} and the second author [Linear Algebra Appl. 427, No. 2-3, 218--233 (2007; Zbl 1132.15010)], about tridiagonal pairs of linear transformations \(A, A^*: V\to V\), where \(V\) is a vector space over a field with finite positive dimension.
