The existence of maximal \(n\)-orthogonal subcategories is studied in various situations. In particular, for \(\Lambda\) an \((n-1)\)-Auslander algebra of global dimension \(n\), module theoretic characterizations and consequences of the existence of a maximal \((n-1)\)-orthogonal subcategory are given, in terms of precise conditions on projective and injective dimensions of simple modules.
