The paper under review deals with the spectrum of the Laplacian on compact manifolds. Let \(M\) be a compact connected manifold without boundary and of dimension \(n\geq 3\). If \(g\) is a metric on \(M\), arrange the non zero spectrum of the Laplacian acting on coexact \(p\)-forms on \(M\) as follows: \[ 0<\mu_{p,1}(M,g)\leq\mu_{p,2}(M,g)\leq\cdots \] One of the main results in the paper under review may be stated as follows: Let \(V\) be a positive real number and \(N\) a positive integer. For each integer \(1\leq p<[\frac{n-1}{2}]\) (or \(p=1\) if \(n=3\)), where \([\frac{n-1}{2}]\) denotes the integral part of \(\frac{n-1}{2}\), fix a sequence \((\nu_{p,i})_{1\leq i\leq n}\) of real numbers satisfying \(0<\nu_{p,1}\leq\nu_{p,2}\leq\cdots\leq\nu_{p,N}\) and each \(\nu_{p,i}\) occurs at most twice (for a fixed \(p\)). Then there exists a metric \(g\) on \(M\) such that: {\parindent6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(a)] \(\mu_{p,i}(M,g)=\nu_{p,i}\) for all \(i\leq N\) and \(1\leq p<[\frac{n-1}{2}]\), \item[(b)] the volume of \((M,g)\) equals \(V\). \end{itemize}} The second result of the paper is as follows: For all integers \(n\geq 4\) and \(1\leq p<\frac{n}{4}\), there exists an \(n\)-dimensional compact manifold \(M\) such that for all integers \(k\geq 1\), there exists a metric \(g\) on \(M\) such that the first eigenvalue \(\mu_{p,1}(M,g)\) is of multiplicity \(k\).
