Let \(A_s(n)\) be the universal algebra generated by the entries of an abstract \(n\times n\) magic matrix, that is, a square matrix of orthogonal projections, all of whose rows and columns sum up to \(1\). The algebra \(A_s(n)\) has a canonical Hopf \(C^*\)-algebra structure, that is, it is a compact quantum group in the sense of Woronowicz and may be viewed as a quantum analogue of the symmetric group \(S_n\). The quantum analogue of subgroups in \(S_n\) are the so-called quantum permutation algebras which are, by definition, Hopf algebra quotients of \(A_s(n)\). The authors develop a combinatorial approach to those algebras as Hopf images of representations of \(A_s(n)\). Besides studying some general problems of quantum permutation algebras, such as commutativity and cocommutativity and existence of tensor product decompositions, the authors also study some special types of quantum permutation algebras coming from Hadamard matrices. Each Hadamard matrix gives rise to a finite-dimensional representation \(A_s(n)\to M_n(\mathbb{C})\) and hence to a (finite-dimensional) quantum permutation algebra. This class of quantum permutation algebras can be reasonably classified for small values of \(n\). The authors show that, under suitable regularity conditions, this can be performed up to \(n=6\). The situation becomes more complicated for large values of \(n\).
