The paper is concerned with classical questions about actions of Lie groups in the setting of Cartan geometries. The main result is an embedding theorem analogous to Zimmer's embedding theorem for automorphism groups of \(Q\)-structures. Several consequences of the main result for automorphism groups of Cartan geometries are discussed. For example, the authors obtain upper bounds on the real rank or nilpotence degree of a Lie subgroup of the automorphism group. They also study consequences for parabolic geometries admitting automorphism groups of high rank; and for geometries additionally equipped with a finite continuous volume form. They prove that if the maximal real rank is attained in the automorphism group of a geometry of parabolic type, then the geometry is flat and complete.
