The author constructs new index theories for general operator equations of the form \(Ax=\Phi'(x)\), with a selfadjoint operator \(A\) and a differentiable function \(\Phi\) whose differential \(\Phi'\) satisfies an asymptotically linear condition. The abstract results are applied to elliptic partial differential equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and to various Hamiltonian systems.
