Weak type inequalities for moduli of smoothness: The case of limit value parameters (Q992027): Difference between revisions

The author deals with limiting cases of the Ul'yanov inequality \[ \omega_k(f,\delta)_q \leq c \, \Big(\int_0^\delta (t^{-\theta} \omega_k (f,t)_p)^{q^*} \, \frac{dt}{t} \Big)^{1/q^{*}}\, , \] where \[ 0 < p < q \leq \infty\,, \qquad \theta:= \frac 1p - \frac 1q\, , \qquad q^* := \begin{cases} q & \text{if}\quad q <\infty\, , \\ 1 & \text{if}\quad q =\infty\, . \end{cases} \] He concentrates on \(p \in [1,\infty)\) and \(q \in (1,\infty]\) s.t. \(p=1\) and/or \(q=\infty\). In addition, he uses moduli of smoothness of fractional order \(\alpha\). In those situations, factors of logarithmic order occur on the right-hand side, more precisely, he proves that \[ \omega_\alpha (f,\delta)_q \leq c \, \Big(\int_0^\delta (t^{-\theta} \log^{\max(1/p', 1/q)} (2/t) \, \omega_{\alpha + \theta} (f,t)_p)^{q^*} \, \frac{dt}{t} \Big)^{1/q^{*}}\, , \tag{1} \] where \(\alpha >0\) and \(\theta\) and \(q^*\) are as above. Also, the sharpness of (1) is discussed. Finally, (1) is applied to prove some embeddings of Lipschitz-type spaces.
