The authors investigate the convergence of the series \(\sum\limits^{\infty}_{n=1}a_n\cos nx\) (1) and \(\sum\limits^{\infty}_{n=1}a_n\sin nx\) (2) with general monotone coefficients. The following definition was introduced by the second author. \noindent Let \(\beta=\{\beta_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\) be a nonnegative sequence. The sequence of complex numbers \(a=\{a_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\) is said to be \(\beta\)-general monotone, or \(a\in GM(\beta)\), if the relation \(| a_n| +\sum\limits^{2n-1}_{k=n}| a_k-a_{k+1}| \leq C\beta_n\) holds for all numbers \(n\), where the constant \(C\) is independent of \(n\). In the case \(\beta_n=| a_n| \) it will be written \(a\in GM\). Theorem 1. (A) Let \(a\in GM(\beta)\) and \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}\beta_{2^n}<\infty\) . Then the series \((1)\) and \((2)\) converge for all \(x\) except possibly for \(x=2\pi k\), \(k\in\mathbb Z\), in the case of the series \((1)\), and converge uniformly on any interval \([\varepsilon,2\pi-\varepsilon]\), where \(0<\varepsilon<\pi\). Moreover, if \(n\beta_n=o(1)\) as \(n\to\infty\), then firstly the series \((1)\) converges uniformly on \([0,2\pi]\) iff \(\sum\limits^{\infty}_{n=1}a_n\) converges and secondly the series \((2)\) converges uniformly on \([0,2\pi]\). (B) If a positive sequence \(a\in GM\) , then the series \((2)\) converges uniformly on \([0,2\pi]\) iff \(\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}na_n=0\) . Also the convergence results for trigonometric series in \(L_p\)-spaces on the one-dimensional and \(n\)-dimensional torus are formulated. The Hardy-Littlewood type theorem for multiple trigonometric series is obtained.
