Let \(F\) be a complex of flat quasi-coherent sheaves on a semi-separated noetherian scheme \(X\). Generalizing a notion introduced by \textit{E. E. Enochs, O. M. G. Jenda} \textit{B. Torrecillas} [J. Nanjing Univ., Math. Biq. 10, No. 1, 1--9 (1993; Zbl 0794.16001)], the authors says that \(F\) is \textbf{F}-totally acyclic if it is acyclic and \(F\otimes {\mathcal J}\) is acyclic for every quasi-coherent injective sheaf \(\mathcal J\). The purpose of this paper is to study such complexes. It shows that \(X\) is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex of flat quasi-coherent sheaves is \textbf{F}-totally acyclic. This extends a result of \textit{S. Iyengar} and \textit{H. Krause} [Doc. Math., J. DMV 11, 207-240 (2006; Zbl 1119.13014)].
