The main result of the paper under review is the following theorem: Let \(X\) be a paracompact topological space and \(G\) a factorizable group of homeomorphisms of \(X\) which does not have any fixed points in \(X\). Assume that there exists a positive integer \(N\) such that every element in \([G,G]\) can be expressed as a product of at most \(N\) commutators. Assume further that \(G\) is bounded with respect to all fragmentation norms corresponding to all open covers of \(X\). Then for the group \(H:=[G,G]\) we have \([H,H]=H\) and there exists a positive integer \(M\) such that every element in \([H,H]\) can be expressed as a product of at most \(M\) commutators. The paper also investigates the case of an open manifold and provides various examples illustrating the results.
