To a finite abelian group \(A\), a non-degenerate symmetric bicharacter \(\chi\) and a square root \(\tau\) of \(|A|^{-1}\), a Tambara-Yamagami category is associated (a special rigid semisimple linear monoidal category). It is well known that monoidal equivalence classes of associated Tambara-Yamagami categories classify the triples \((A,\chi,\tau)\). Using techniques from the theory of characters of abelian groups, the author provides formulae for Frobenius-Schur indicators of Tambara-Yamagami categories. It is then proven, in the case when \(|A|\) is odd, that an extension of the Frobenius theorem for finite groups to Tambara-Yamagami categories is true precisely when \(|A|=1 (\operatorname{mod} 4)\). It follows a construction of a Hopf algebra with traceless antipode thus answering a question posed by \textit{Y. Kashina, S. Montgomery} and \textit{S.-H. Ng} [``On the trace of the antipode and higher indicators'', Isr. J. Math.188, No.~1, 57--89 (2012)]. Finally, properties of the Frobenius-Schur indicator are studied, in particular, for \(A=\mathbb{Z}_p\) and \(A=\mathbb{F}_{p}^{2}\) for prime \(p\). It is shown that such results can be used to distinguish monoidal equivalence classes of the relevant Tambara-Yamagami categories.
