Let \(A\) be a bounded linear operator on a Banach space \(X\). A bounded linear operator \(B\) on \(X\) is said to be an inner inverse of \(A\) if \(ABA=A\). Consider the following problem: If \(B\) is an inner inverse of \(A\) and \(\parallel (C-A)B \parallel < 1\) holds for some bounded linear operator \(C\) on \(X\), does it follow that \(B(I+(C-A)B)^{-1}\) is an inner inverse of \(C\)? The motivation for this question comes from a corresponding query for the usual inverse for which the answer is in the affirmative. However, for the inner inverse, the answer is in the negative, in general. The authors provide certain characterizations for \(B(I+(C-A)B)^{-1}\) to be an inner inverse of \(C\). Similar questions for other classes of generalized inverses like the Moore-Penrose inverse and the group inverse are also studied.
