The authors consider the fourth-order Emden-Fowler type equation \[ x^{(4)}+q(t)|x|^{\gamma }\operatorname{sgn}x = 0 , \quad 0<\gamma <1. \] By assuming that \(q\) is regularly varying and of index \(\sigma \in {\mathbb R}\) (denoted by \(q \in RV(\sigma )\)) (cf. [\textit{N. H. Bingham, C. M. Goldie} and \textit{J. L. Teugels}, Regular Variation. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press (1987; Zbl 0617.26001)], the existence of solutions \(x\in RV(\rho )\) with \(\rho = 0,1,2,3\) is proved and the precise asymptotic behavior for \(t\rightarrow \infty \) of \(x(t)\) is determined. In addition, the existence of nearly regularly varying solutions of index \(\rho \in (0,1)\cup (2,3)\) is proved. Remark of the reviewer. Some of these results overlap with the ones of \textit{V. M.
