The topic of the paper contributes to the study of \(C_p(X)\), the class of real valued continuous functions with pointwise convergence. In particular cardinal inequalities of these spaces are studied. Using the index of Nagami the main theorem proved in the paper has applications in the theory of analytic sets. From the abstract: ``A particular case of the main theorem states that if \(L \subseteq C_p(X) \) is a Lindelöf \(\Sigma\)-space and the Nagami index \(Nag(X)\) of \(X\) is less or equal than the density \(d(L)\) of \(L\), then (i) there exists a completely regular Hausdorff space \(Y\) such that \(Nag(Y) \leq Nag(X) , L \subset C_p(Y)\) and \(d(L) = d(Y)\); (ii) \(Y\) admits a weaker completely regular Hausdorff topology \(\tau'\) such that \(w(Y,\tau') \leq d(Y) = d(L)\)''. From their main theorem the authors characterize weakly analytic sets from a large class \(\mathfrak{G}\) of locally convex spaces and as a corollary obtain generalizations of the Amir - Lindenstrauss theorem for spaces from the class \(\mathfrak{G}\).
