Let \(k\) be a field and \(q\) a nonzero element of \(k\) which is not a root of one. Suppose that \(n\geqslant 2\) is a positive integer and \(R_q=k_q[M_n]\) is the algebra of quantum matrices of size \(n\) which is a \(q\)-deformation of the algebra of functions on square matrices of size \(n\). It is a graded algebra generated by elements \(x_{ij}\), \(1\leqslant i,j\leqslant n\), of degree 1 subject to some quadratic relations. An automorphism of \(R_n\) is unipotent if it is identical modulo \(\oplus_{j\geqslant 2}R_j\). The main result of the paper says that a unipotent automorphism of \(R_q\) is identical. It solves the conjecture of S. Launois and T. H. Lenagan. It follows that the automorphism group of \(R_n\) coincides with the group of torus automorphisms.
