Let \(k\) be a field, \(A\) a ring isomorphic to \(k[X,Y]\) and \( K:=\text{Frac}A.\) A field generator of \(A\) is an \(F\in A\) such that \(K= k(F,G)\) for some \(G\in K.\) If \(G\) can be chosen in \(A\) then \(F\) is a good field generator of \(A.\) A field generator of \(A\) which is not good is said to be bad. Their existence and properties were studied by [\textit{S. S. Abhyankar}, Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. 41, No. 1, 77--97 (2010; Zbl 1197.14061)], \textit{C. J. Jan} [On polynomial generators of \(\mathbf{k} (X,Y)\). Ph.D. dissertation, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. (1974)], \textit{P. Russell} [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 15, 555--571 (1975; Zbl 0341.14008)], and the authors [J. Algebra Appl. 14, No. 9, Article ID 1540005, 35 p. (2015; Zbl 1329.14111)]. In the paper, the authors introduce a ``relative'' notion of good and bad field generators. A field generator of \(A\) is a very good field generator of \(A\) if it is a good field generator for each \(A^{\prime }\subset A\) such that \(A^{\prime }\cong k[X,Y]\) and \(\text{Frac}A^{\prime }=\text{Frac}A\). Similarly they define very bad field generator of \(A.\) In the paper they study the existence, characterization, and properties of these new notions in various terms: valuations, dicriticals etc.
