The authors and K.\,Tu [``On super weak compactness of subsets and its equivalences in Banach spaces'', Preprint] introduced super weakly compact sets in a Banach space in order to localize the notion of a superreflexive Banach space. In doing this, they had to generalize the notion of finite representability to consider when a subset of one Banach space is finitely representable in a subset of another Banach space. Based on these ideas, the first two authors with B. Wang and W. Zhang [\textit{L.-X. Cheng} et al., Stud. Math. 199, No. 2, 145--169 (2010; Zbl 1252.46009)] proved that a Banach space is superreflexive if and only if its closed unit ball is super weakly compact. In the article under review, the authors use these ideas to characterize superreflexive Banach spaces in terms of a fixed point property. Results of \textit{B. Maurey} [Semin. Anal. Fonct. 1980--1981, Expose No. 8, 18 p. (1981; Zbl 0476.46023)] and \textit{D. van Dulst} and \textit{A. J. Pach} [Indag. Math. 43, 153--164 (1981; Zbl 0467.46019)] combine to show that a Banach space \(X\) is superreflexive if and only if \(X\) has the super fixed point property for isometries, i.e., if \(C\) is a nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset of a Banach space \(Y\) that is finitely representable in \(X\) and \(T:C\to C\) is an isometry, then \(T\) has a fixed point in \(C\). In the present article, the authors prove a local version of this result by showing that a nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset \(C\) of a Banach space is super weakly compact if and only if \(C\) has the super fixed point property for (a restricted class of) affine isometries. More precisely, a subset \(C\) of a Banach space \(X\) is super weakly compact if and only if, for every nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset \(K\) of a Banach space \(Y\) such that \(K\) is finitely representable in \(C\) and every \(T:K\to K\) that is the restriction of an affine isometry from \(Y\) to \(Y\), \(T\) has a fixed point in \(K\). Taking \(C\) to be the unit ball of \(X\) gives the corollary that a Banach space \(X\) is superreflexive if and only if \(X\) has the super fixed point property for affine isometries (in the above sense). The authors note that an example of \textit{D. E. Alspach} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 82, 423--424 (1981; Zbl 0468.47036)] provides an isometry on a super weakly compact subset of a Banach space that is fixed point free: so the word ``affine'' in the authors' characterization of super weakly compact sets is crucial. Finally, the authors consider the super fixed point property under renormings. For example, the authors prove that, if \(\mu\) is a finite measure, \(L_1(\mu)\) can be renormed so that every weakly compact set in \(L_1(\mu)\) has the super fixed point property (for nonexpansive mappings).
