Let \(p(\cdot)\) be a Lebesgue measurable function on a bounded domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). For some \(k>0\) the space \(L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\) is defined as the set of Lebesgue measurable functions \(f\) on \(\Omega\) such that \[ \int_{\Omega} |k f(x)|^{p(x)} dx < \infty. \] In this paper, the author considers a local estimate for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function in Lebesgue spaces with exponent functions. More precisely, let \(1 \leq p(\cdot) < \infty\) and \(p(\cdot) \in \text{EXP}_a(\Omega)\) for some \(a > 0\). If \(f \in L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\) with \(f \not\equiv 0\), then \(p(\cdot)\log(Mf) \in \text{EXP}_{a/(a+1)}(\Omega)\), where \(Mf\) is the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator of a function \(f\). It is also shown that this result is sharp in the sense that if \(p(\cdot)\) belongs to any Orlicz space that contains all the \(\text{EXP}_a(\Omega)'s\), there exists \(p(\cdot) \not\in \text{EXP}_a(\Omega)\) for all \(0< a \leq 1\) and \(f \in L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\) such that \(p(\cdot)\log(Mf) \not\in \text{EXP}_{a}(\Omega)\) for all \(0< a \leq 1\).
