A well-known problem in the theory of aperiodic structures is studying their spectral properties such as the diffraction spectrum or the dynamical spectrum. The paper is devoted to a new approach to this problem in the special case of one-dimensional tilings obtained by substitutions over a two-letter alphabet. The main idea is to derive some renormalisation relations from substitution rules and use them to study spectral properties. For example, consider pair correlation coefficients \(\nu_{\alpha\beta}(z)\) with \(\alpha,\beta\in\{a,b\}\) as the relative frequences of two points in the tiling at distance \(z\) subject to the condition that the left points is of type \(\alpha\) and the right one of type \(\beta\). From the inflation rules we can obtain a system of linear equations for \(\nu_{\alpha\beta}(z)\). These equations can be used for the computation of the diffraction measure of the tiling. The main goal of the paper is to consider some important examples of two-letter substitutions such as the Fibonacci chain, the Thue-Morse and the Rudin-Shapiro systems and apply this method to study their corresponding tilings. | |||
