This paper studies a generalization of extending modules, called \(\mathcal G\)-extending (or Goldie extending) modules, introduced in [\textit{E. Akalan} et al., Commun. Algebra 37, No. 2, 663--683 (2009; Zbl 1214.16005)]. These are modules \(M\) satisfying the property that any submodule \(X\) of \(M\) contains an essential submodule \(Y\) of \(X\) such that \(Y\) is essential in a direct summand of \(M\). As a main focus, the paper addresses the question of when a direct sum of \(\mathcal G\)-extending modules is again \(\mathcal G\)-extending. One of the main results gives a characterization of when a direct sum of two \(\mathcal G\)-extending modules, \(M_1\) and \(M_2\), is also \(\mathcal G\)-extending, and the result involves the finite internal exchange property of the modules under consideration, as well as the weakly generalized relative injectivity between the modules \(M_1\) and \(M_2\). The author also considers the question of when a direct sum of uniform modules is \(\mathcal G\)-extending (or extending) with the internal exchange property.
